Local 222 membership meeting, April 19, 1937.

An important mass membership meeting of UAW Local 222 was held the evening of April 19, 1937. It was the 12th day of the historic strike against General Motors – the strike that established industrial unionism in Canada.

Frederick Griffin provided an exciting and detailed account of the meeting “when over 3,000 members crowded not only every seat of the auditorium of the Oshawa high school, but crowded the balcony, choked the side aisles and the doors”. Griffin’s article started on page 1 of The Toronto Daily Star, April 20, 1937, and continued on page 7.
